my son daniel asked me to give my opinion, i was going to keep this to myself , but the truth of it even jim would agree wit.h..here goes i feel that auto makers have a carberator than is able and willing to produce 75 miles to the gallon, but for some strange reason won't put it on cars, but i feel now they are going to have to...just wait and see after my wife buys her new car thart gets 32 miles per gallon, they will immediately start selling the new cars that get 75 miles to the gallon, and i'm not talking about motorcycles

Nope, they don't. Sorry. You burn less fuel/air(stoich mixture), you get less power. You have less power, you need less weight, tighter tolerances, better design to make it go, but there is no magic carb that will get 75 mpg and still produce the same power. Fuel injection is far more efficient at maintaining the stoich mixture through all the ranges that the engine goes through, so thinking that a carb will do it better just seems a little ridiculous to me, sorry. They have hybrids or solar powered cars or fuel cells etc. that have been develped for a long time that can get better efficiency, but they are terribly small, low powered, extremely expensive to buy, hard to maintain....etc. etc. They will become more popular now that gas is higher priced I would guess, but there is a payoff with any of them, but they are getting better all the time.
You know those small bubbly cars with 2 small wheels in the front and big tire in the back? It's only a two seater. I read about them in the newspaper the other day. They are using them for airports. Like when a businessman gets of the plane and needs to go around town to go to a meeting or something. I am not kidding: they go 70 miles a gallon! My boss's wife saw two of them on the freeway(she goes up north twice a week to run saw blades) So, there is a car that goes 70 miles a gallon. I am not lieing.

You just can't have your cake and eat it too. You could get 1,000,000 mpg in a flinstone car I guess they knew more then we do.
The reason those 3 wheeled vehicles get 70 mpg is NOT the carb, it's all the reasons I talked about in my previous comment. "lightweight, tighter tolerances, better design, low power, small" Maybe they are hybrids, maybe they just have a really small motor etc. etc. ..similar to a motorbike that will get 70 mpg. Sure, they have to have a well designed fuel delivery system, but the "magic" happens in the way it uses that fuel to produce the most power possible in the most effecient way and to use that power effeciently to do what you need to do. It's kind of like your road bike compared to your mountain bike. Your road bike uses the power from your body more efficiently than your mountain bike to move down the road because of it's design(skinny wheels, lighter etc.), but try taking it off road! Try towing anything with that 3 wheeled vehicle, or try taking more than 2 people. It probably gets less mileage with a second person in it even! Put a third person and maybe you woudn't make it up a hill. One reason diesel engines get better mileage for the power produced is because there is more power potential in diesel fuel than gasoline. So I can have a truck with 600 ft pound of tourque and gets 12 to 19 mpg. You can't do the same thing with gasoline given the same paramaters. You could invent a car to run on bird shit, but it would take a alot of bird shit to make the same power, and then the demand for bird shit would go up and it would start to cost as much as gasoline..

We all know car companies have the technology to make a car run more efficently than the ones we have now do. It is just a matter of money. They will make more money on selling you replacement parts for an inferior vehicle than they would selling you a vehicle that runs great for a long long time. The car companies KNEW eventually it would come a day when gas would be soooo expensive, but they kept on selling SUV's and trucks that ate up gas. Now they are closing their SUV factories and putting good people out of work. Car companies just care about their bottom line.....
All companies care about their bottom line. If they don't make a profit then the whole company goes out of business and all the good people who work there loose their jobs. Car companies may have some concept vehicles that get better milage but are too expensive to make for the public. There is no magic vehicle out there that will get great gas milage and last foreverand be cheap to buy. IT DOES NOT EXIST. It is against all the laws of nature and physics.
It is simple supply and demand people want to buy SUV's so they make SUV's people stop wanting them, they stop making them. It is not the car manufacture that chooses what people want. We love our big truck we bought it because it is what we wanted and it still is what we want.
Interesting dialogue you started, Barlow. I agree with Shell that no car is going to last forever and get a million miles per gallon. Companies have to make money. Also, I have to concur that people are going to drive what they want to drive as long as they can afford to fuel it regardless of the cost.
Actaully, there is a carb that can produce 75 mpg!!, and it's in my garage! On my son's dirt bike! For some strange reason, they don't put it on cars though.:)

Putz, I agree with you. As soon as your wife buys her car that gets 32 mpg, they will come out with one that gets towards 75 mpg.
Our daughter has a Prius, she and her husband are very judicious with the gas pedal. It is three years old now, batteries are fine.
So what? It approaches 65 mpg for her, 60 mpg for her husband. The 75 mpg technology won't be a carberator, I'm betting on that. And I don't even bet, it is against my r ...

Unless solar power drastically changes it will not be able to replace gas engines. It just can't give you the bang for your buck. The car you showed is great example. (cool in theory) but at the price you could buy 25500 gallons of gas for a normal car even at $4 a gallon, plus the car at that price. That is 765,000 miles in a 30 mpg gas car. I don't think it could possibly go further then that. Plus it has only one seat so if you had a car that got 35-40 mpg with two people you are still more efficient and if you had 3 or 4 people there is no compairason. What if you get to work and it is cloudy so I guess you don't go home that day. It didn't give the horse power (I am guessing really really low) How safe is it in a crash? It may be the furture but it is a LONG way off.
As for our oil problems we should tap the resources in our own countrry to not be dependent on foreign oil. We have enough resources if we would just use them.
Yep, even with hybrids you have to figure the power it takes to charge the batteries etc.
I have to agree that solar power is a long way off. I can't even imagine how many solar panels I would have to strap on my dirt bike to get 50hp. I guess that's why we love our oil!:)
It would be nice to have one to drive to work though...if they ever become practical enough to do so.
